So I realized that people were getting mad over the emoticon: uwu
And then I see a bunch of confused people that no one has the decency to answer - so here is your answer as researched by a tumblr girl who is sick of this topic.
So, basically this happened, according to my searching (grain of salt, please): A group of older men were trying to force girls to send nudes. To guilt the girls they used emoticons like this one and acted really innocent, trying to guilt trip and harass the girls. It worked. The girls felt pressured, scared, and guilty all at once - so they did.
Hence, problem. People are now generalizing saying that using “uwu” or acting the way that these men acted (the emoticon is the icon for this emotionally manipulative situation) is terrible, and from this came the title “uwu culture”.
The truth is that acting innocent while harassing people is the problem, and had nothing to do specifically with the emoticon. If anything, there is no “uwu culture”. This situation is an extension of rape culture and emotional manipulation.
I hope this clarifies.

none of that sentence makes one bit of sense to me!
is it because i am a dude or…….
like first, how do you force someone to do send something by computer?
second, how does one guilt trip and harass but act innocent all at once? this is some kind of complicated social master lesson.
third, what were the girls afraid of exactly? this is happening through a computer? what kind of harm was going to come to them? and they felt guilty why exactly? i do not understand this mentality at all. at what point do we say the guys are gross but the girls… come on and get it together girls! you will say this is victim-blaming, but in this case, and i don’t know any details besides what is in this post, but how hard is it to say NO NUDES. and when is it appropriate to ask why is anyone talking to someone willing to be a jerk just to get nude pictures? there are billions of people on the internet, isn’t it a little stupid to feel pressured by anyone?
Well, I understand where you’re coming from, especially if you - like myself - have easily learned to not trust people on the internet unless you’ve known them for a really long time. However, we have to take into consideration that:
There are many girls and boys on tumblr that reach out for emotional connections because of some underlying problem with their school life, social life, or family life.
Many predators befriend their victims for a long time, and will act as if it is their one goal to make these teens happy, even though they secretly already have a perogative that will negatively hurt these teens.
Trust forms over long time relations, and predators are masters of manipulation and faking for extremely long periods of time.
When it comes to the time where the predator demands items of such a nature, they have already worked themselves into a specific area of these teens’ brains where they are always right, and they can be trusted. A little bit of manipulation after a long time of trust can push anyone over the edge.
Especially if they are in a seat of authority - like an adult, et al. (Psychological source: Milgram study of authority on human action - I’m on my phone but as a psychology student I swear it would be so beneficial to search this up)
If a predator had just randomly come up to these users, they wouldn’t have responded - they would probably think as we tend to do right now, they would think like the post you placed above. But its not that simple. It never seems to be, and that sucks.
Anyway, I hope this helps what you were questioning. Thank you for asking!
